Behind the Story: Boat strike controversy and Spotify Wrapped

The US military command is coming under increasing pressure to explain the circumstances of a controversial boat strike in the Caribbean on 2 September.

Earlier this week, The Washington Post reported that the country's Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered that there should be no survivors from the strikes.

US Navy Admiral Frank 'Mitch' Bradley gave evidence to a closed-door session to politicians yesterday.

The Hill columnist Niall Stanage explained it is still not clear who gave the order for the second strike that killed two shipwrecked survivors.

"The part that is contested is whether Pete Hegseth gave that order in the first instance, that there should be no survivors - and, relatedly, whether Hegseth is trying to pin the blame on the Navy admiral," he said.

"It was behind closed doors, so we are dependent in learning what he said from the testimonies of lawmakers who were there.

"Naturally enough, Republican lawmakers and democratic lawmakers emphasis different points."

Mr Stanage said he believes Mr Hegseth is "under real pressure".

Hosts Louise Byrne and Cian McCormack also discuss the phenomenon of Spotify Wrapped with John Meagher of the Irish Independent - and what your ‘listening age’ actually says about you.
