A 21-year-old man is due in court in the morning, charged with the attempted murder of a police officer.

He was arrested after an attempt was made to stab an officer in the stomach during an arrest operation in Derry earlier this week.

A hunting knife with a five-inch serrated blade was used.

A senior police commander later said the officer had been saved from a potentially fatal injury by his body armour.

The man was being detained for a breach of bail conditions at the time of the incident at Collon Lane in Derry yesterday.

A second officer sustained a gash to the leg in the same incident.

As well as attempted murder, the man has been charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

He will appear at Dungannon Magistrates' Court in the morning.

A second man appeared in court today on separate charges linked to the same incident.

The 20-year-old was charged with three counts of assaulting police and possession of Class B drugs.

He was remanded in custody.
