HIV testing will be carried out in a Dublin city centre nail salon later today, ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December.
Two nurses will be based at Tropical Popical on South William Street from 3pm-5pm, offering tests in a "supportive and fabulous" environment.
No nail appointment is necessary and visitors to the salon will also be able to avail of educational resources and chat with people living with HIV.
"It shouldn't be a big deal finding out about your own health, getting tested is as easy as getting your nails done," Tropical Popical founder Andrea Horan said.
In Ireland, 20-25% of new HIV diagnoses are reported in women, although advances in treatment mean that many people living with HIV live normal and healthy lives.
Enda McGrattan lives with HIV and founded the Poz Vibe Tribe, which is dedicated to tackling HIV stigma through community, visibility, and positive representation.
"My hope is that the women who come to the event will look at HIV testing and all STI testing as a form of self care and also community care. Caring for yourself and others is what it's about and knowing your status is so important," he said.
Today's initiative is part of the city's first World AIDS Day Festival, a five-day programme of events organised by Poz Vibe Tribe and GCN (Gay Community News).
It got under way yesterday, aiming to deliver "a vibrant blend of remembrance, celebration, and HIV awareness".
