Behind the Story: The crimes of disgraced surgeon Michael Shine

Today, the Government announced a 16-week scoping inquiry into abuse by former surgeon Michael Shine.

Shine is alleged to have sexually abused hundreds of boys and young men during his time as a surgeon in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Shine worked in the hospital for 30 years and had his own private practice.

Reporter Saoirse McGarrigle, who met and interviewed Shine as recently as May this year, discusses the case with hosts Fran McNulty and Laura Fletcher.

She said Michael Shine continues to deny the abuse despite being found guilty of the sexual assault of nine men in two trials in 2017 and 2019.

Shine was released from prison in 2022, having served three years.

Ms McGarrigle has previously spoken to several victims.

"The story is very raw and it's very real for people today," she said.

She said the men may have a "long battle" ahead of them but this is a step forward.

Dignity4 Patients, the support group for victims and survivors of abuse by Michael Shine, welcomed the news of the scoping inquiry.

The group said it was an opportunity for victims to have their voices heard and believed, and for their experiences to be fully investigated and officially acknowledged.
