ATM issues - 'You can't get any money here at all'

In Moate, Co Westmeath, the town's only on-street ATM went when the town's last remaining bank closed four years ago.

Residents of the town described the difficulties they face when trying to access a round-the-clock ATM, with one local saying he sometimes has to travel around 12km to access an ATM for cash.

"You can't get any money here at all," he said

Locals of the town also added that they usually have to travel to Athlone to access a bank.

Louise Lennon, Policy Officer for Irish Rural Link said that cash is still frequently used by older people and people trying to manage a household budget, so "giving people that choice and that option is still very important".

It comes as a new law that requires financial institutions to ensure that an ATM is located within 10km of the vast majority of homes and businesses is set to come into force this week.
