Hundreds attend vigil to remember victims of Louth crash

Hundreds of people have taken part in vigils to remember the five young people who died in a crash in Dundalk, Co Louth, last weekend.

Three separate vigils were arranged in Ardee, Co Louth; Drumconrath, Co Meath; and Aughnamullen, Co Monaghan, to pay tribute.

The victims in the crash were: Chloe McGee, 23, and Shay Duffy, 21, both from Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan; Alan McCluskey, 23, from Drumconrath in Co Meath; Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee in Co Louth; and Chloe Hipson, 21, from Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

They were travelling together in a Volkswagen Golf while on their way to Dundalk for a night out when they died in the crash on Saturday.

A sixth person who was in the car, also aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries, but has since been discharged.

Two other people were also injured in what gardaí described as a "shocking and devastating" crash.

Prayers at the Drumconrath GAA grounds were led by Parish Priest Fr Finian Connaughton.

Local man Alan McCluskey had played for the club at underage level.

Club chairman Paul Carey said that event was organised to show solidarity and help and support in whatever way they can.

He said what happened had been a total shock for everyone and that the families were suffering "unimaginable pain".

Just a few minutes away at the grounds of the Sean McDermotts club in Ardee, candles in the shape of a heart flickered on the ground, where another vigil was held.

Ardee is the home place of 23-year-old mechanic Dylan Commins. He and Alan McCluskey were best friends.

A third vigil was held in Monaghan, at the home club of Chloe McGee.

Photographs and candles were placed in the stand at Aughnamullen GFC.

While the pitch was filled with hundreds of people who came to pay their respects to the five young friends.

The incident, which involved the Golf and a Toyota Land Cruiser, happened on a road near Dundalk just after 9pm on Saturday.

The two occupants of the Toyota, a man and a woman in their 20s, remain in hospital where they continue to receive medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Post-mortem examinations of the deceased have now been completed and their remains have been released to their families.

Meanwhile, gardaí continue to investigate all the circumstances behind the crash and issued a renewed witness appeal.

Funeral details have emerged for some of the deceased, with Alan McCluskey's to be held at 10am on Friday, with Dylan Commins' to be held at 2pm the same day. Chloe McGee's funeral is due to be held at 11am on Saturday.
