Man, 45, charged over seizure of firearms in Cork

A 45-year-old man has been before a special district court sitting in Cork charged in connection with the seizure of guns, ammunition and pipe bomb components earlier this week.

Paul Sheehan of Elm Drive, Shamrock Lawn, in Douglas, was remanded in custody.

On Tuesday night, gardaí in Mallow in north Cork searched a car they had seen acting suspiciously and seized a number of items. The driver was arrested.

Later, they searched a house in Douglas in Cork city, where they removed several items for further examination.

Detective Garda Anthony Daly gave evidence of arresting Paul Sheehan at Mallow Garda Station and putting four charges to him. He said that after caution he replied, indicating that he understood the charges.

Paul Sheehan is charged with possessing a .32 calibre Beretta semi-automatic pistol, and a slide for a 9 milimetre semi-automatic Glock pistol at the Applegreen service station in Mallow on Tuesday night.

He is also charged with possessing a .38 calibre deactivated six-shot Smith and Wesson revolver and possession of components for three pipe bombs at his home in Douglas on Wednesday.

Solicitor David O'Meara told the court Paul Sheehan is not working and is receiving job seekers allowance of €240 per week.

Paul Sheehan made no bail application.

He was remanded in custody and will be back before the court via video link next Wednesday.
