A witness in the trial of a man accused of murdering an Irish pensioner in London and robbing his groceries has told the Old Bailey that he saw a person "stomping" and "kicking" the elderly man as he lay on the ground.
John Mackey, an 87-year-old man, died two days after the attack from blunt force impacts to his head and chest.
A 59-year-old Peter Augustine denies charges of murder and robbery. He was not present in court today, for the third day in a row.
Mr Mackey had been walking home after visiting his local supermarket and takeaway.
The food he had purchased was later found in the defendant's hotel room, the court was told. It appeared to have been eaten.
This afternoon the jury heard from a male witness, Xian Deng, who recalled seeing a black man "attacking a person" who was lying on the ground.
Mr Deng told the court that the alleged attacker was around 6ft tall and was "continually stomping and kicking" the victim, using both of his legs.
He said it lasted roughly ten seconds.
Asked on a scale from one to ten, ten being "very severe" force, how hard the victim was hit, Mr Deng replied, "ten".
The court heard that the attacker was seen by Mr Deng searching the upper part of Mr Mackey's body and jacket.
Mr Deng told jurors that while he could not see the attacker's hands, he could see 70% of his body and that he was confident that the attacker was searching Mr Mackey.
The court was also told by Mr Deng that the attacker left the scene for roughly two to three seconds, only to return again and grab Mr Mackey's grocery bag out of his hands as he was left lying on the ground.
When Mr Deng and other witnesses approached Mr Mackey they could see injuries to his head and a pool of blood next to him.
Some members of Mr Mackey's family, who were present in court again today, became upset as the witness described Mr Mackey's condition.
The 87-year-old was an uncle to 22 nieces and nephews.
CCTV footage shown to the court captures Mr Mackey in the minutes leading up to the attack, dressed in a grey overcoat and trilby hat, using a walking stick.
He had purchased a cottage pie, cornflakes and a newspaper that evening in his local Co-op supermarket, before purchasing a sausage and chips takeway shortly afterwards.
Mr Mackey was attacked as he walked home.
He was originally from Callan, Co Kilkenny, but lived in London most of his life after moving there as a teenager.
Peter Augustine denies the charges of murder and robbery.
On the first day of his trial, he shouted from the dock that he "never hit" Mr Mackey.
"I took the bag and I ran," he claimed.
The trial continues at the Old Bailey.
