The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering an elderly Irish pensioner in London has seen CCTV footage of the final minutes leading up to the 87-year-old being attacked.

John Mackey, who was originally from Calan in Co Kilkenny, died on 8 May last year, two days after suffering blunt force impacts to his head and chest.

The prosecution said that the footage shown to the court appeared to show the defendant in the case, Peter Augustine, following John Mackey as he walked home after visiting his local supermarket and kebab shop.

Mr Augustine, who is 59, denies the charges of murder and robbery.

The attack itself was not captured on camera. Both Mr Mackey and Mr Augustine were seen walking towards the crime scene near Finsbury Park.

They both disappeared from view but approximately one minute and 48 seconds later, Mr Augustine is seen walking back from the scene, holding Mr Mackey's shopping bag.

A number of witnesses were also captured on camera, including Dr Rebecca O'Connell, who appears to walk back towards the crime scene after hearing shouting.

Mr Augustine did not appear in court at the Old Bailey in London today, with the judge asking the jury not to speculate why.

Yesterday, Mr Augustine was removed from the court, after repeated disruption.

He shouted from the dock, towards family members of John Mackey, "I never hit him. I took the bag and I ran".

Detective Constable Gemma Bristow guided jury members through the CCTV footage today.

It showed Mr Mackey, on the evening of 6 May, dressed in a grey overcoat fully buttoned up, with his signature trilby hat and walking stick.

He had visited his local Co-op supermarket to purchase cornflakes, a cottage pie and newspaper.

Mr Mackey then went to a kebab shop to buy a takeaway. However, while walking to the kebab shop, CCTV shows Mr Augustine in the background.

Mr Augustine stayed outside the kebab shop while Mr Mackey purchased his takeaway.

While Mr Mackey walked home after purchasing his takeaway, Mr Augustine can be seen walking several paces behind him.

According to the prosecution, the CCTV footage appeared to show Mr Augustine following Mr Mackey.

Judge Sarah Whitehouse told the court that it was a matter for the jury to decide if Mr Augustine was actually following Mr Mackey.

Mr Augustine is also seen picking up a disregarded drinks can on the street, taking a sip from it, before tossing the can into a green area a few moments later.

After the alleged attack, two buttons belonging to Mr Mackey's coat were found close to the scene.

Two days later, Mr Augustine was arrested at the Beaconsfield Hotel where he had been staying. The food containers and newspaper bought by Mr Mackey were found in the hotel room, with the cottage pie appearing to have been eaten.

Family members of John Mackey were in court again today.

The pensioner had moved to the UK at the age of 19 and spent most of his life living in North London.

However, he maintained strong links with family in Ireland, where he was buried last June.

The trial continues.
