An amateur artist from Limerick has drawn the first exhibited portrait of president-elect Catherine Connolly.
Fiona Fitzgerald's pencil drawing of Ms Connolly is on display as part of the Dlúthpháirtíocht: 'Irish Solidarity with Palestine' touring art exhibition which showcases art by Irish and Palestinian artists.
"I would never have seen myself as an artist, or allowed myself to see myself as one. I just love to draw," she told RTÉ News.
Ms Fitzgerald works in human rights law and was drafted to work on the Connolly election campaign in its final two weeks.
She was commissioned to draw a portrait of Ms Connolly by the art collective, Dlúthpháirtíoch.
It was completed in just under two weeks, with Ms Fitzgerald working through the night in order to finish the piece.
At the recent 'Ceol for Connolly' concert in Dublin's Vicar Street, she told Ms Connolly about her project.
"I spoke to Catherine. I showed her a draft. My impression was that she was embarrassed, but so supportive and excited to see the finished piece.
"This exhibition strives to explore all that people in this country have tried to do for those who are enduring continual suffering there. We are becoming more and more aware of Catherine's legacy. She has been a paramount advocate for the people of Palestine. It seemed obvious that she be included."
