What does Jim Gavin withdrawal from Presidential Election mean for your ballot paper?

As Jim Gavin has withdrawn from campaigning, what does that mean for your ballot paper and your vote?

Mr Gavin will still appear on the ballot paper as candidates can only withdraw from a Presidential Election up until the close of nomination which for this election was 24 September.

That means there will still be three names on the ballot, even though only two candidates remain active in the campaign.

This has led to many questions such as does a vote for Jim Gavin still count and what happens if he gets the most votes?

We spoke to Art O'Leary, Chief Executive of An Coimisiún Toghcháin, Ireland's Independent electoral commission.

Watch our video to hear him explain what it all means for your ballot paper and your vote.
