Investigation after person dies in house fire in Co Cavan

A person has died following a house fire in the Killygowan area of Co Cavan.

Gardaí were called to the scene yesterday evening at around 7.35pm.

Units of Cavan County Fire Service from Cavan town and Killeshandra also responded to the incident, which occurred about 6km west of Cavan Town.

Firefighters encountered what they described as a "well-developed fire".

The person's body was found upstairs within the extensively damaged property.

Gardaí have not yet identified whether the remains are those of a male or female.

The person's body remains at the scene, which has been preserved to allow for a technical examination to be carried out.

Gardaí have said the office of the local coroner has been notified.

While gardaí have stressed that their investigations are at an early stage, it is understood that no foul play is suspected.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Cavan County Fire Service said they "convey their deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the deceased".
