They say 24 hours is a long time in politics and the upcoming presidential election seems no different.
Fianna Fáil presidential candidate Jim Gavin withdrew from the race last night after recent days had given him "cause to reflect".
His withdrawal followed a report in the Irish Independent on Saturday that he owed a former tenant €3,300.
The following day, Mr Gavin appeared on a three-way debate on The Week in Politics before pulling out of the race a short time later.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he fully understood Mr Gavin's decision and believes "it is the correct one".
Since then, a flurry of Fianna Fáil ministers, TDs and MEPs have come out to, mostly, defend Mr Martin's choice of the former Dublin GAA manager, while simultaneously calling for a review of how he was selected.

Katie, David and Fran go Behind the Story to break down the last 48 hours and what it means going forward with the election looming.
Mr Gavin’s campaign was also hit with a number of missteps – including a drone flying in a restricted area to get aerial footage for a video.
"The party may feel that Jim Gavin let them down – Jim Gavin may also feel that Fianna Fáil let him down in how this campaign ran", Fran said.
"When you run for a big party like that you expect to have a well-oiled machine behind you – and he didn’t".
The trio also discuss the pressure on Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin as it was his decision to run a non-political candidate.
