Independent presidential candidate Catherine Connolly has said all three candidates did their best in last night's television debate.

Commenting on last night's Virgin Media presidential debate, she said they can be difficult and stressful and that she would not like to speak about who won and who did not.

Speaking in Ballyfermot in Dublin tonight, she said that it was "historical and momentous" that the parties on the left are supporting her.

She said that we need to look forward to a united Ireland as is set out in the Constitution and with the value of recognising diversity and different communities.

Fianna Fáil's presidential candidate Jim Gavin has said he has been getting "great feedback" for his performance in last night's debate.

Speaking to reporters in Roscommon where he canvassed, he said people had been acknowledging that it was his first big event in that "pressure cooker" situation, and said he got the points across that he wanted to during the exchanges.

He also said he was not a politician and also acknowledged the President "can't do policy and can't, unfortunately build houses".

Mr Gavin also said he wanted to be an active, energetic and positive president.

He acknowledged his parents' West of Ireland roots. His father was a bus driver and his mother a school teacher, he said.

Gaza, housing, immigration and safety in Dublin were among the topics the three candidates took questions on during the first televised debate of the Presidential Election campaign.

Mr Gavin, Independent Catherine Connolly, and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys took part in the Tonight Show Presidential Debate, moderated by broadcaster Kieran Cuddihy.

There was no knock-out blow in the first presidential TV debate, in which the candidates generally prioritised getting out their own message rather than trying to counter their opponents.

It was a wide-ranging encounter with subjects ranging from homelessness, to immigration, to the future of peacekeeping all up for discussion.

Ms Connolly, Mr Gavin and Ms Humphreys all experienced testing moments during the 80-minute show.

Afterwards, the three candidates declared that they were happy with their performance and looked forward to returning to the campaign trail.
