A 22-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with an incident of alleged false imprisonment and endangerment of a woman in Co Kerry in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Muhammed Ahsan was brought to court in Cork as there were no sittings of the District Court in Kerry today.

Detective Garda Shane O'Driscoll of Listowel Garda Station gave evidence of his arrest, charge and caution yesterday evening.

He said Mr Ahsan replied "no", to each of the four charges when they were put to him under caution.

The charges are that he intentionally or recklessly engaged in conduct while driving a car with the front door open, he merged onto the main road, in the knowledge that the passenger was hanging out of the vehicle, which created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to another, on 28 September at Clieveragh Road, Listowel.

He was also charged with false imprisonment of the victim on the same date; with dangerous driving; and with the theft of the victim's mobile phone.

The State's application was to remand Mr Ahsan in custody to appear before the District Court in Listowel on Thursday.

Defence solicitor Brendan Ahern said there was no objection to this and that a bail application would be made at that stage.

The State asked for reporting restrictions in respect of naming the victim which the judge granted.

The judge also made provision for an Urdu interpreter.

Mr Ahern asked that his client's address would not be reported. The judge granted the request to protect family members.

Mr Ahern was told that his application for free legal aid was a matter for the District Court in Co Kerry.

Judge Dorgan remanded Mr Ahsan in custody to appear before the District Court in person in Listowel this coming Thursday, 3 October.
