Gardaí in Co Tipperary are continuing to question a man in his 30s in connection with an assault which has left a pensioner in a critical condition in hospital.

The man in his 80s was attacked at his home on St Michael's Avenue in Tipperary town on Friday night.

The alarm was raised when the elderly man was found on the ground outside his detached garage at around 9.35pm.

He was taken by ambulance to Limerick University Hospital.

Gardaí described his condition as critical.

As gardaí carried out door-to-door enquiries, and the Garda Technical Bureau forensically examined the scene, a man in his 30s was arrested yesterday evening for questioning about the assault.

He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a garda station in the county.

Investigating gardaí have renewed their appeal for information.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward, specifically anyone who was in the area of St Michael’s Avenue between 7pm and 10pm on Friday, and has video camera footage (including dash-cam).

They called on anyone with information to contact Tipperary Town Garda Station on 062 80670, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
