As voters prepare to elect a new President of Ireland, here is a look back at the nine people who have already held the office.
In 1938, a year after Bunracht na hÉireann was enacted, Ireland's first president Douglas Hyde began his term.
Decades later in 2011, President Michael D Higgins took office and is now about to finish his second term. His successor will be elected following a vote on 24 October.
Between Hyde and Higgins, seven other heads of state have left their mark on history.
