The HSE has said it is rare for a baby to be born alive following termination of pregnancy.

Latest figures from the executive show that 12 babies were born alive, following termination of pregnancy, in 2022.

The figures are published by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre annual reports.

The HSE said that the chance of an ongoing pregnancy after the administration of both mifepristone and misoprostol (the drugs used to end pregnancy) is less than 3%.

The details are included in a HSE response to a recent parliamentary question from Independent Ireland TD Ken O'Flynn.

Of the 12 cases in 2022, one was under 22 weeks, nine were at 22-27 weeks and two were at 28-31 weeks.

None of these perinatal deaths were recorded at 32-36 weeks or 37-41 weeks.

In response to the figures, Pro Life Campaign spokesperson Eilís Mulroy said it was a deeply concerning humanitarian issue and that it raises questions about the standard of medical care the babies subsequently received.

Mr O'Flynn said there needs to be a lot more openness surrounding the medical care given to or withheld from the babies in these situations.

The HSE said it does not collate specific national data on the care of babies born alive after termination of pregnancy.

It added that all infants delivered with a diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, including those delivered following termination of pregnancy, are provided with comfort care in line with HSE guidance.
