Behind the Story: The search for the missing boy in Donabate

Behind the Story takes an in-depth look at the search for a child, missing and presumed dead, in north Dublin.

The case came to light after the Department of Social Protection raised concerns with Tusla following an application for social welfare.

Tusla, in turn, contacted gardaí expressing their concern for his whereabouts.

Gardaí have been searching a green area near Donabate for the past four days.

RTÉ's Social Affairs & Religion Correspondent Ailbhe Conneely has been reporting on the story this week and joined David and Katie to examine the case.

"I think the issue for everybody is this – not only Tusla and the authorities – but also the wider public is 'how can this happen’?

"How can a child vanish for a number of years and not be noticed?" Ailbhe said.

The investigation has already drawn comparisons with the unrelated case of Kyran Durnin.

Kyran, who would now be nine years old, was reported missing from his home in Drogheda, Co Louth at the end of August last year.

"He was last sighted in June 2022, as far as we know, and then reported missing in August 2024," Ailbhe said.

There is an ongoing Garda investigation into the case of Kyran Durnin.
