Gardaí detect over 500 vehicles speeding on Slowdown Day

Gardaí have detected more than 500 vehicles speeding so far, as part of National Slowdown Day, including a vehicle travelling at 116km/h in an 80km/h zone in Co Donegal.

Gardaí are conducting the national speed enforcement operation, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders.

The initiative is running for 24 hours from midnight last night until midnight tonight.

The aim of the initiative is to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions across the country as the first full week of schools reopening takes place.

So far gardaí, along with GoSafe mobile and static safety cameras, have detected a total of 569 vehicles travelling in excess of the speed limit.

Examples of high speeds detected include:

  • 134km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N11 at Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow
  • 123km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N60 at Facefield, Co Mayo
  • 116km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R265 at St Johnston, Co. Donegal
  • 114km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R445 in Portlaoise, Co Laois
  • 107km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N81 in Tullow, Co Carlow
  • 79km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R267 in Bundoran, Co Donegal
  • 78km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R639 in Glanmire, Co Cork
  • 91km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R339 in Monivea Road in Galway
  • 83km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R188 in Drumbear, in Co. Monaghan

Gardaí conduct several high-profile National Slowdown Days each year aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of speeding.
