Russian attacks, including on an apartment block in Kharkiv city, killed 14 people across Ukraine, authorities have said, ahead of talks in Washington between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.

The early morning drone attack on Kharkiv reduced part of a five-storey residential building to rubble and sparked fires on at least three floors, governor Oleg Synegubov said on Telegram.

The emergency services posted videos showing rescuers trying to break through rubble to free a trapped resident.

An entire family, including a toddler and her 16-year-old brother, were among the seven killed in the overnight drone strike, authorities said, adding 23 others were wounded.

The city near the Russian border was also hit hours earlier by a ballistic missile that wounded at least 11 people, Mayor Igor Terekhov said.

Mr Klymenko said another three people were killed and 23 wounded in a strike on the Zaporizhzhia region.

In the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, Russian shelling killed four people in settlements still under Ukrainian control - Dobropillia and Kostiantynivka, regional prosecutors said.

Russia also struck the southern Odesa region with drones, sparking a fire at a fuel facility, regional governor Oleg Kiper said.

Russia, which did not immediately comment on the attacks, said it does not target civilians but thousands have been killed in its full-scale invasion since February 2022.

Ukraine's air force said Russian forces launched 140 drones and four missiles at Ukraine overnight, adding that 88 drones had been downed.

The drone attack was Russia's largest on Ukraine since 4 August.

The air force said it had recorded strikes at 25 locations in six different regions.

The attacks came as Mr Zelensky and his European allies headed to Washington for talks aimed at ending the three-and-a-half-year war.

President Trump said ahead of Mr Zelensky's arrival in Washington that Ukraine would not be able to reclaim the annexed Crimean peninsula or enter NATO as part of a peace deal.

Mr Zelensky has repeatedly pushed back against pressure to cede Crimea, the southern peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.

Russia, which has been advancing for months on the battlefield, has proposed that Ukraine withdraw from the Donbas region in exchange for freezing the frontline in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, where the main cities are still under Kyiv's control.

20 dead in fire at Russian factory

The death toll from an unexplained blast last week at a production facility in Russia's Ryazan region has jumped to at least 20 dead with another 134 people injured, local emergency services have said.

Pavel Malkov, governor of the Ryazan region that lies just southeast of Moscow, said on Friday that the incident had been triggered by a fire breaking out inside a workshop at the factory.

But it was unclear from Russian media reports what caused the fire or what exactly the factory was producing. Official Russian sources gave no details beyond efforts to find and treat the injured.

"As of August 18, 20 people died as a result of the emergency incident," the local emergency service headquarters said in a post on Telegram.

"There are 134 injured, of which 31 patients are in hospitals in Ryazan and Moscow, while 103 patients are undergoing outpatient treatment."
