A man has been arrested following the death of a man aged in his 70s after an alleged assault in Limerick city.
The incident occurred in the Watergate area at around 11.30pm on Thursday.
The man was taken to University Hospital Limerick following the assault, where he later died.
A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at a garda station in Limerick city.
He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and can be questioned for a total of 24 hours.
The scene of the incident was preserved for a technical examination and a senior investigation officer has been appointed.
Gardaí are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and have appealed to any witnesses to contact them.

They are also keen to review any camera recordings captured by motorists who were in the area between 11pm and midnight.
The Office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have both been notified. A post-mortem examination on the victim is due to take place.
