A 34-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Joseph McEvoy, who was attacked and killed in Dublin early yesterday morning.

Christopher Kelly, with an address at Shancastle Park in west Dublin, made no reply when he was charged at Dublin District Court this afternoon with the murder of the father-of-two.

Detective Sergeant Sean Cosgrave gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution, and told the court that he arrested Mr Kelly at 3.07pm this afternoon.

He charged him at 3.55pm.

There was no application for bail as bail cannot be granted on a murder charge before the District Court.

Judge David McHugh granted Mr Kelly free legal aid after he was told that he was not receiving any social welfare.

He remanded Mr Kelly in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on 11 July.
