People Before Profit-Solidarity TD Paul Murphy has been released from custody after being detained in Egypt, his party has said in a statement.

Mr Murphy was detained earlier in Cairo and had his passport confiscated, the party said.

He had previously been detained on Friday along with a group of people travelling through the country to reach Rafah on a Gaza peace march.

People Before Profit said that Mr Murphy had, "on the advice of the Irish Embassy" gone to "a Cairo police station to retrieve his phone".

He had sent a message while in the station expressing concern "that his passport had been taken again and was told he cannot leave", the party said.

Deputy Murphy had attempted to leave, the statement continued, "but has been prevented from doing so by the police".

Other participants in the Global March to Gaza were also detained, the party said.

In his message, which is included in the party statement, Deputy Murphy said: "I have been detained in the Abdeen police station in Cairo."

He added that after arriving at the police station, officials "had me talk to the secret police and left me in a room with an interpreter".

"They claim they are looking for my phone. I just attempted to leave but they said that I cannot leave."

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime programme, Deputy Murphy's partner, Jess Spear, who is a People Before Profit councillor for Tallaght-Central, said: "He had purchased another phone in the meantime so he could be in contact with us, and he went down to the police station, they took his passport, they took him into a room to discuss with the secret police and I think they tried to get him to sign a paper saying that he lost his phone himself, which he refused to do."

"They have held him for hours now, refusing to give his passport back - he asked to leave twice, and they told him no, and in the last 20 minutes or so, they've taken his phone, so now we've lost contact."

Ms Spear called on the Tánaiste to get in touch with the Egyptian authorities to demand the immediate release of Deputy Murphy and for his passport to be returned to him.

"They should stop detaining, not only Paul, but all others who are peacefully trying to march to Gaza."

When Ms Spear last spoke with Deputy Murphy, he assured her that he was not being mistreated by the police, other than being detained against his will and having had his passport taken.

"I would ask others to please put pressure on Simon Harris, to put pressure on the Egyptian embassy here as well to allow people to peacefully march, but also to release Paul and give him back his passport,"

"Anybody who can put pressure on them is very welcome and necessary."
