The Public Accounts Committee has asked HIQA to come before it to discuss its role in inspecting nursing homes.

It's in the wake of revelations by RTÉ Investigates that the health watchdog had assessed Beneavin Manor nursing home in Glasnevin in Dublin as largely compliant before undercover reporters appeared to show residents being handled inappropriately.

The documentary also found a litany of other repeated care failings including chronic staff shortages, vulnerable residents left unsupervised and a lack of basic supplies such as towels, bedsheets, gloves and sanitary wipes.

HIQA is currently engaged in a review of all nursing homes run by Emeis Ireland, which runs Beneavin.

The private company has apologised for the standard of care captured in the documentary.

HIQA executives are expected before the Public Accounts Committee on 17 July, just before the Dáil's summer recess.
