A 56-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the human trafficking of a woman for the purpose of exploitation.
Dainis Grinfelds, with an address at Dublin Street, Monaghan town, was brought before Monaghan District Court this morning.
The Latvian national is charged with the human trafficking of a woman for the purpose of exploitation within the State on a date in 2015.
The alleged offence is contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act.
Detective Garda Philip Temple from the Human Trafficking Investigation and Co-ordination Unit at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.
The court heard Mr Grinfelds replied, "I'm not guilty", when the charge was put to him.
There was no application for bail and Judge Raymond Finnegan remanded the accused in custody to appear before the same court again on Monday via video-link.
Applications for legal aid and the services of a Latvian interpreter were both granted.
