Irish Gardener Billy Alexander has won a gold medal at this year's Chelsea Flower Show in London.

It is the third time he has been awarded a gold medal at the London event, having secured one in 2023 and 2021.

The former banker and Kerry resident was awarded the prize this year for his fern collection. He also received the "President's Award" today.

Over 100 species of fern were featured throughout his display.

Speaking about his award this morning, Mr Alexander, of Kells Bay Gardens in Co Kerry, said that he was "quite honestly speechless and over the moon to have received another gold medal this morning".

He also paid tribute to his team for their efforts in helping him get the garden ready for the event, including his head gardener Gregorz Zawlocki.

There was another Irish success at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

Galway sculptor Donnacha Cahill received the top prize of five stars in the trade stand category.

Galway sculptor Donnacha Cahill's display was called the 'Inquisitive Hare' series

"You don't just come to Chelsea and put up a trade stand you really have to put in a massive amount of work. All the trade stands are judged, and five stars in the best you can get", he explained.

Mr Cahill said the award meant "so much" to him, and he was "just delighted" with the result.

His display is called the "Inquisitive Hare" series.
