The funeral details have been announced for Garda Kevin Flatley, who was killed after he was struck by a motorcycle while carrying out a checkpoint on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened in the Lanestown area of north county Dublin.

His funeral mass will be held at SS Peter and Paul's Church, Balbriggan at 1.30pm on Friday.

Earlier, at the opening of today's Dáil session Leas-Cheann Comhairle John McGuinness called on members to remain standing for a minute's silence in memory of Gda Flatley.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his "deepest sympathies" to the family, friends and colleagues of Gda Flatley.

He said he was an outstanding community person, and he extended sympathies to all members of An Garda Síochána.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald also expressed her sympathies at the death of Gda Flatley.

Senior Garda officers and colleagues of Gda Flatley, serving and retired, attended a prayer service at Dublin Castle yesterday evening to remember and reflect on the life of another garda who lost his life in the line of duty.
