The body of a teenager has been recovered from waters off the coast of Co Donegal after three teenagers got into difficulty while swimming in Lough Swilly yesterday afternoon.

The body was discovered last night between Ned's Point and Fahan, close to the town of Buncrana, and was removed to Letterkenny University Hospital.

It followed an extensive air and sea rescue operation in an effort to find the teenager who was missing.

The alarm was raised after the teenagers, aged between 16 and 19, got into difficulty while swimming at around 4pm.

One of the teenagers managed to swim ashore.

A third was taken from the sea and was brought to Letterkenny General Hospital, where his condition is said to be "very serious".

Two RNLI lifeboats were assisted by teams from Mulroy and Greencastle coastguard units with further help by up to a dozen local yachts.

The multi agency search included the Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo along with the RNLI lifeboat from Buncrana and up to 12 local yachts.

The search is concentrating on an area between Ned's Point and Fahan in Lough Swilly

A number of ambulances also arrived at Buncrana Pier.

The search and rescue operation was coordinated by the Malin Head Coast Guard, and local vessels helped in the search.

A spokesperson from the Department of Transport said a member of the public raised the alarm, reporting a number of people in difficulty in the water.

"Greencastle and Mulroy Coast Guard Units were tasked along with both Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboats and the Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 from Sligo," they said.

An updated statement from the department said: "Just after 9pm this evening a second person was recovered from the water by Greencastle Coast Guard unit and transferred to Buncrana Pier.

"The Coast Guard would like to thank all the search and rescue units and members of the public who were on scene for their assistance in the search."

In a separate incident, the body of a man has been recovered from the sea off the coast of Co Wexford.

The Irish Coast Guard and the RNLI recovered the man's body east of Raven Point near Curracloe and brought it back to shore this afternoon.

Gardaí were alerted to the discovery at around 2pm.

The man's body was brought to University Hospital Waterford where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Gardaí said the results of the post-mortem will determine the course of their investigation.

The man is currently unidentified and gardaí are working to establish his identity.
