More than 114 people arrested for drink and drug driving over Easter weekend

More than 114 people have been arrested over the Easter weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In the first 48 hours of the Easter Roads Policing Operation, on Thursday and Friday, An Garda Síochána tweeted that 41 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

A further 24 drivers were arrested on Saturday while yesterday, more than 50 were arrested.

The operation is continuing today.

At this point last year, 140 people had been arrested.

During Easter Sunday, more than 550 drivers were caught breaking the speed limit.

One driver in Co Longford was recorded travelling at almost three times the limit.

The car reached a speed of 179km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R194 in Granard.

Throughout Saturday, more than 350 drivers were detected exceeding the limit.

Top speeds include 110km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Naas Road in Dublin 12.
