Children's Health Ireland (CHI) has said it will ensure parents, and their families are kept informed through the process of an ongoing audit of a certain type of hip surgery across its children's hospital sites and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh.

CHI said the audit is not yet complete and so it cannot provide any details of its findings.

It added that it cannot comment on any media reports in relation to the audit as to do so would undermine the integrity of the audit process.

The review was established after a concern was reported that the threshold criteria being used for surgical intervention in relation to the surgeries may have been different across CHI sites and Cappagh hospital.

CHI said it will correspond with families as appropriate.

The review was announced in July 2024 to look at a random and anonymised sample of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) surgeries performed during 2021 - 2023.

DDH is a condition where the ball and socket joint of the hip does not properly form in babies and young children.

Babies diagnosed with DDH early in life are usually treated with a fabric splint - called a Pavlik harness - and surgery may be needed to correct the issue.

The audit is being conducted by a UK pediatric orthopaedic consultant with specialist expertise in the area.
