A 43-year-old man, who claimed he accidentally cut his wife's throat after a struggle, has been found guilty of her murder.

During his trial, Regin Parithapara Rajan had denied murdering 38-year-old Deepa Paruthiyezhuth Dinamani at their home in the Wilton area of Cork city on 14 July 2023.

Today, he was found unanimously guilty by the jury of seven women and five men at the Central Criminal Court in Cork after they had deliberated for just over five hours.

Rajan, who faces a mandatory life sentence, was remanded in custody to 2 May for sentencing by Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford.

Ms Dinamani's only sibling will attend the sentencing virtually from India.

The trial had previously heard that Ms Dinamani, who was originally from Kerala in India, had moved to Ireland in March 2023 with her husband Regin Rajan and their five-year-old son, to take up a senior role with a financial services company in Cork.

But the marriage was unhappy and the chartered accountant had told her brother she wanted a divorce.

Ms Dinamani's body was found in a blood-soaked bed by members of the Armed Response Unit after her husband had made a 999 call in which he admitted killing his wife.

Rajan had told the court in direct evidence that the death of his wife was a tragic accident. He said he had gone into her bedroom to retrieve his passport and never intended to harm his wife.

He had claimed that his wife had picked up a carving knife he had purchased a few days earlier for cutting fish and asked him to "go back".

He said he tried to get the knife from her but they had a "struggle" and ended up on the bed and she got cut by the knife "in the tussle".

He admitted under cross examination that he failed to call an ambulance for his dying wife saying he was in shock.

This afternoon the jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty.

Ms Justice Lankford thanked the jury for their service and excused them from jury service for up to five years.
