Two women who died after crash in Cork named locally

The two women who died following a head-on collision in Mallow, Co Cork, yesterday afternoon have been named locally as Mary Coughlan, 64, from Mitchelstown and Susan O'Sullivan, 41, from Mallow.

Emergency services attended the scene of the incident, which happened shortly before 4pm yesterday, on the N72 Killarney to Mallow Road.

Ms Coughlan and Ms O’Sullivan, who were the drivers of separate vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Coughlan was the sole occupant of her car.

Ms O’Sullivan was travelling with her children, who are aged five and eight.

The boy and girl were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Ms O'Sullivan and her children had visited family in Boherbue and were on their way back home to Mallow when the fatal crash occurred.

The bodies of both women were taken to the city mortuary in the aftermath of the crash.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Bernard Moynihan told Red FM that there is a deep sense of sadness in the community.

"Yesterday evening as the word spread among the community, people were shocked at the news," he said.

"My sympathies to the families. They are special people, well-known people, hard-working, decent people especially across Western Duhallow and Boherbue."

Meanwhile, gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to the crash which occurred at Navigation Road in Mallow at 3.50pm.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 3pm and 4pm yesterday are asked to make this footage available to investigating officers.

Separately, a woman in her 60s died and three others were injured following a three-vehicle collision in Co Waterford.

The incident happened on the N25 at Moonameen at around 2.10pm yesterday.

The woman, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on her body.

The driver and passenger of a second car, both aged in their 50s, sustained serious injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time, gardaí said.

Gardaí have appealed to any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 1.20pm and 2.20pm to make this footage available to them.
