Watch: Chicago river dyed green for St Patrick's Day

The Chicago river has been dyed green for St Patrick's Day.

Thousands of people flocked to downtown Chicago to witness the river turned green in keeping with a tradition that started back in 1962.

Since 1962, the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 has been pouring 40 pounds of dye into a stretch of the river to help it turn a vibrant green colour.

The union says the dye they use is an orange-red vegetable-based powder that is non-toxic and safe for wildlife.
