The Government is expected to approve the appointment of Brigadier General Rossa Mulcahy as the new Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces tomorrow.

Tánaiste Simon Harris is scheduled to bring a memo to the Cabinet to approve the appointment by President Michael D Higgins.

The brigadier general has 35 years' experience in the Defence Forces and has been part of deployments with the United Nations and NATO.

Since 2021, he has been Assistant Chief of Staff with responsibility for organisation transformation.

Brig Gen Mulcahy has served in Lebanon with UNIFIL and spent two years on deployment to Syria and Lebanon with UNTSO.

Brigadier General Rossa Mulcahy was also part of NATO’s support mission in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The appointment follows the Government nomination of the outgoing Chief of Staff Seán Clancy as Chair of the EU Military Committee, a position he will take up on 1 June this year.

Brig Gen Mulcahy will be appointed for a minimum of two years, during which time major changes to the Defence Force's command structures are set to be introduced.

This includes a new position of Chief of Defence, which Brig Gen Mulcahy will be eligible to apply for.
