Arrest as woman in her 80s dies following Cork incident

A man in his 30s has been arrested and a garda investigation is under way in Carrigaline, Co Cork, following the death of an 82-year-old woman.

The woman died this afternoon at Cork University Hospital, after she was brought there for treatment this morning.

It is understood gardaí attended the woman's home at Garrydhu Drive, Kilmoney Road, on Sunday after they were called to a row there involving the woman and a man.

The man was taken to Cork University Hospital for a psychiatric assessment but was later discharged.

The woman did not require medical treatment at the time, but it is understood she became unwell last night and was brought to Cork University Hospital this morning.


It is understood she was being treated for a head injury when she died this afternoon.

An investigation has begun and a man has been arrested.

The woman's home in Carrigaline has been sealed off.

It is due to be examined by a garda crime scene investigation team this evening.

A post-mortem examination on the woman's body will be carried out tomorrow at Cork University Hospital by State Pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to provide support and information to the woman's family.

Investigations are ongoing.
