Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he discussed a "shared vision of real steps" to end the war in Ukraine with Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

In a post on X, Mr Zelensky said he informed Mr Martin of his recent conversation with French President Macron, adding that "coordination with partners is important at this moment".

He said Ireland supports Ukraine's approach that the initiative must be a joint one.

Mr Zelensky said he discussed financial aid, European affairs and Ireland’s contribution to protecting Ukrainians with the Taoiseach.

He thanked Ireland for its support.

It comes as Taoiseach Micheál Martin spoke with Mr Zelensky by phone ahead of a summit next week to mark the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

Mr Martin is understood to have told President Zelensky of Ireland's ongoing support for Ukraine, and how Ireland will support the acceleration of Ukraine's EU membership application process.

The phone call came before a summit next week to mark the third anniversary of Russia's invasion, and as US president Donald Trump said Ukraine has "no cards" left to play.

In a statement Mr Martin said: "I had a warm engagement with president Zelensky, where I once again reaffirmed Ireland's steadfast support for Ukraine and its people. We discussed how, together with the EU, we can advance a just, sustainable and durable peace in Ukraine.

"I also took the opportunity to offer my support for the acceleration of Ukraine's membership of the EU, and to state Ireland’s continuing financial support for Ukraine.

"I look forward to joining online with other leaders for president Zelensky’s summit to discuss this further next week," he said.

The phone call came as US President Donald Trump again hit out at President Zelensky, and repeated his view that the Ukrainian president does not need to attend talks about ending the war in Ukraine.

In an interview on Fox News Radio, he said: "I’ve been watching for years, and I’ve been watching him negotiate with no cards. He has no cards. And you get sick of it.

"So, I don’t think he’s very important [for the Ukrainian president] to be at meetings, to be honest with you. He makes it very hard to make deals."
