A 23-year-old man has appeared in court in Belfast charged with the murder of Quham Babatunde, who was stabbed to death in Dublin city centre last weekend.

Ryan Ndede of Boroimhe Birches, Swords, Dublin was brought before Belfast Magistrates Court this morning.

Detective Constable Pauline Boyce of the PSNI gave evidence that she could connect the accused to the charges.

Prosecution Counsel David McNeill told the court that what he described as a "group melee" ensued in Dublin city centre in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

He said Mr Babatunde was stabbed four times, including once through the heart, which proved fatal.

Mr McNeill told the court that gardaí used CCTV to trace the accused's movements to a rented apartment in Dublin 8, where a knife was recovered.

The knife is still undergoing forensic examinations and has not been identified as the murder weapon.

The court was told Mr Ndede was picked up again on CCTV arriving by bus to Belfast on Sunday afternoon, where he later boarded a ferry to Birkenhead, Liverpool.

Mr McNeill said the ferry was turned around and the accused arrested in Belfast.

A cross jurisdictional arrangement generally allows for someone accused of committing an offence in the south to appear before the courts in Northern Ireland.

However, solicitor Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law representing the accused argued that the court did not have jurisdiction in this case.

He also told the court that the description of the accused does not match that of an eye-witness account.

Detective Constable Boyce said there were "several different descriptions" of the alleged attacker made to gardaí.

District Judge Alan White said that he did hold jurisdiction in the case.

There was no application for bail and Mr Ndede was remanded in custody to appear before the same court again on 21 March.

An application for legal aid was granted.

Mr Ndede is the third man to be charged in connection with an attack on the 34-year-old Mr Babatunde on South Anne Street in Dublin city centre in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

A second man was seriously injured during the same incident.

Rory Carr, 21 from Ard Na Gréine, Seapoint Lane in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, and Jeffrey Bangu, of the same age and from Cardy Rock Crescent in Balbriggan, have both been charged with violent disorder and assaulting the two victims causing them harm.

Both of those men have been remanded in custody and are due in court again next week.
