Delegations from both the US and Russia are meeting in Riyadh this morning for talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine have been excluded from this morning's discussions.

Here are the key members of the Russian delegation:

Sergei Lavrov – Foreign Minister

Mr Lavrov, aged 74 and in office since 2004, is Moscow's longest-serving foreign minister since Soviet times.

A graduate of the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), he speaks fluent English and French and also Sinhalese, having worked as a Soviet diplomat in Sri Lanka.

Before becoming foreign minister, Mr Lavrov was Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations.

He can be acerbic, especially with interlocutors whom he considers poorly prepared, but also dour, once remarking: "I am not paid to be an optimist."

Yuri Ushakov – Kremlin Foreign Policy Advisor

Yuri Ushakov has been one of Vladimir Putin's advisors since 2012

Mr Ushakov, aged 77, has been advising Mr Putin since 2012.

Also a graduate of MGIMO, Mr Ushakov attends Mr Putin's most important international meetings and speaks for him on major diplomatic issues. He speaks English and Danish.

While ambassador to Washington from 1998 to 2008, he wrote: "What offends us is the view shared by some in Washington that Russia can be used when it is needed and discarded or even abused when it is not relevant to American objectives."

Head of Russia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Kirill Dmitriev was not present at this morning’s meeting with the US officials but attended seperate meetings in Riyadh.

Among the negotiators for the US are:

Marco Rubio – US Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arriving in Saudi Arabia

Mr Rubio, aged 53, was sworn in as US Secretary of State last month. He is the first Hispanic and first fluent Spanish speaker to assume the position of top US diplomat.

Mr Rubio previously had a telephone call with his Russian counterpart, Mr Lavrov, in which he "reaffirmed President Trump's commitment to finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine," according to the State Department.

Mike Waltz – National Security Advisor

Mike Waltz served in the US Army from 1996 to 2005

Mr Waltz, aged 51, is a US army veteran and long-standing supporter of Mr Trump, before his appointment as National Security Advisor.

A former US representative in Florida’s congressional district, Mr Waltz is a retired US Army Colonel and the first Army Green Beret to be elected to Congress.

Steve Witkoff – Middle East Envoy

Steve Witkoff is a long-time friend of US president Donald Trump

Mr Witkoff, aged 67, is an American billionaire real estate investor.

It is understood that he played a crucial role in negotiating the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas earlier this year.

Mr Witkoff is a long-time friend of Mr Trump and was at the scene of the attempted assassination attempt on the US president in Florida last September.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud, Saudi Foreign Minister and Musaed bin Mohammed al-Aiban, National Security Advisor are hosting the meeting in Riyadh.
