Over 580 drivers caught speeding in last two days

More than 580 drivers have been caught speeding in the last two days, with one motorist caught travelling 106km/h in a 60km/h zone in Goresbridge, Co Carlow.

Another motorist was caught driving 116km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N55, Lissoy, Glasson, Co Westmeath.

In an update on its Bank Holiday Weekend Campaign, gardaí said 63 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The operation began at 7pm on Thursday and will last until 7am on Tuesday.

Gardaí said they will be conducting both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing and high-visibility checkpoints during the operation.

They are appealing to motorists to use roads with care.

Gardaí added the highest risk of injury is between midday and 3pm each day during the weekend.

Three people have died on roads in the last 48 hours.

Yesterday, two men died in a crash on the N80 in Leagh, Rathoe, Co Carlow.

Separately, a man in his 60s died after three vehicles crashed near Blakes Cross in north Dublin yesterday morning.

Fourteen people have died on roads in the Republic and five other people were killed on roads in Northern Ireland so far this year.
