Donald Trump is the first US president since the 19th century to win a second term after losing the White House, in turn becoming the country's 47th President.
He returned to Washington emboldened after winning the national popular vote over former vice president Kamala Harris by more than 2 million votes, however he still fell just short of a majority.

9.45am: Trump arrives at St John's Church for mass
Donald Trump's first event of the day was to attend a service at St John's Church in Washington, DC ahead of his inauguration.
Mr Trump was accompanied to the event by his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, and members of his family.
He was also joined at the service by Vice President JD Vance and his wife.
The service marks the beginning of a day of ceremonial events.

10.35am: Trump departs St John's Church to meet with Biden
Following the service, Donald and Melania Trump departed St John's Church and made their way to the White House in order to bid farewell to outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

10.40am: Harris meets VP successor Vance at White House
US Vice President Kamala Harris - who lost the election in November to Donald Trump - welcomed incoming vice president JD Vance to the White House.
They were accompanied by the outgoing Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff and incoming Second Lady Usha Vance.
11am: Joe Biden welcomes Donald Trump back to the White House
Outgoing US president Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden welcome Donald and Melania Trump at the North Portico of the White House ahead of the inauguration ceremony.

Asked by reporters how they felt, Mr Biden responded, "Well."

Donald Trump took the oath of office for the second time, becoming the 47th president of the United States.
He swore to "preserve, protect and defend" the US Constitution.
12.10pm: Trump begins his inaugural address in US Capitol
Moments after being sworn in to office, US President Donald Trump said that "the golden age of America begins right now," but the country must be honest about the challenges it faces and confront what he called a crisis of trust.
Speaking for almost 30 minutes, the address echoed some of the themes he sounded at his first inauguration in 2017, when he spoke of the "American carnage" of crime and job loss that he said had ravaged the country.
12.23pm: 'My life was saved for a reason'
During his address, Donald Trump said that God saved him from an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania while his was campaigning "for a reason".
"I was saved by God to make America great again," Mr Trump said.

US country singer Carrie Underwood was among a host of artists who performed in the US Capitol during Donald Trump's inauguration official swearing in ceremony.
Ms Underwood performed 'American the Beautiful'.

1pm: Inauguration ceremony concludes
President Donald Trump departs from the East Front of the US Capitol in Washington, DC after being sworn-in as President.
The ceremony finished with prayers to bless the new Trump administration and the singing of the US national anthem.

2.15pm: Biden and Harris exit stage left
Former US president Joe Biden and former first lady Jill Biden smile and wave as they leave Washington, DC aboard Air Force One for the final time after a farewell ceremony.

The menu includes a range of opulent dishes and wines from across the United States over three courses.
