Former RTÉ political editor Donal Kelly has died aged 86.

A native of Buncrana in Co Donegal, he worked at the Irish Press before joining RTÉ in the 1960s.

During his career, Mr Kelly covered the conflict in Northern Ireland and reported on a turbulent political scene in the 1970s and 1980s as well as international events.

In 1990, he covered Nelson Mandela's address to both houses of the Oireachtas, as well as Mikahil Gorbachev's visit in 1989 and the divorce referendum of 1986.

He also reported on 1989's General Election.

He retired in 2002.

Mr Kelly is survived by his wife and two sons.
