Mirjana Pap had been reported missing at the weekend

A murder investigation is under way into the death of a woman whose body was found in a field in Co Roscommon yesterday.

The woman has been formally identified as Mirjana Pap, who had been missing from Athlone since last weekend.

Gardaí said they are following a definite line of enquiry.

Earlier, gardaí issued an appeal for information regarding the movements of a car between 11am and midday on Saturday.

The silver 08-G registered Peugeot 207 is understood to have travelled from Beechville estate in Athlone onto the N6 westbound from junction 11 to junction 13 before continuing on the R362 from Monksland to Bealnamulla.

Motorists who travelled along these routes within this timeframe and who may have video footage, including dash cam, are asked to provide this to gardaí.

It comes as gardaí continue to carry out a search of a house in Athlone as part of an investigation to try and establish how and where Ms Pap died.

Two cars have been seized with DNA and forensic testing under way.

A house in Athlone has also been cordoned.

Ms Pap's body was removed to University Hospital in Galway, where a post-mortem examination was carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist.

Gardaí said the results of the post-mortem examination are not being released for operational purposes.

An incident room has been set up at Athlone Garda Station and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.

They are focused on the post-mortem results along with forensic and DNA tests from the house and the two cars seized.

Flowers were placed at the scene where Ms Pap's body was found on lands at Curraghaleen, close to the border with Co Westmeath.

Gardaí had been carrying out extensive enquiries over the last few days as part of a missing person appeal.

A Croatian national, Ms Pap had been living in the Athlone area for several years.

It is understood she had a number of grown-up children.

She was well-known and worked locally.

One woman who said she knew Ms Pap and who did not want to be named, said Ms Pap's family were her number one drive in life.

She loved them and everything in life was with them in mind, the woman added.

A GoFundMe page set up by Ms Pap's friends to support the family with funeral costs has raised over €16,000 with over 300 contributors.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed to provide support to Ms Pap's family.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information relating to the investigation to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 649 8550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
