More than 1,200 drivers caught speeding over weekend

A driver doing 150km/h in an 80km/h zone in Co Limerick was among the more than 1,200 motorists detected for speeding offences last weekend, An Garda Síochána has said.

That detection was made on the R445 at Castleconnell.

A motorist driving at 92km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R408 at Rathcoffey, Co Kildare was also detected.

Other significant speeding detections between Friday and yesterday were 99km/h in a 60km/h zone in Parteen, Co Clare and 160km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N60 at Barnagreggaun, Co Mayo.

Friday was a National Slow Down Day.

Over the same period, 101 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Since the start of the Christmas Enforcement Campaign on 29 November, gardaí have said 590 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.

Nearly 200 vehicles were seized by gardaí over the weekend for various road traffic offences.

The campaign continues until Monday 6 January, with gardaí appealing to all road users to take extra care and time to complete their journeys.

So far this year, 170 people have died on Irish roads. In Northern Ireland, there have been 64 road deaths.
