A man in his 40s has been arrested by gardaí as part of the investigation into a fatal hit-and-run incident in Co Limerick at the weekend.

Marguerita Sheridan, 21, was struck by a van at Bank Place in Rathkeale shortly after midday on Saturday.

The driver failed to remain at the scene to offer her assistance or to alert emergency services for help.

Ms Sheridan was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where she later died.

The arrested man is being held at a garda station in Co Limerick.

A van believed to have been involved in the incident was also recovered by gardaí and will be subject to a technical examination.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Rathkeale area between 11.30am and 1pm on Saturday, particularly those with camera footage, have been asked to contact Rathkeale Garda Station on 069-63222, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666111, or any garda station.

A post-mortem examination on Ms Sheridan's body was conducted by the State Pathologist yesterday.

Gardaí have said the results are not being released for operational reasons.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, local Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins said the community of Rathkeale was shocked by Ms Sheridan’s passing.

"It would be an understatement for me to say that the entire community is really deeply saddened by what has happened to Marguerita, particularly given the time of year," he said.

He added that Ms Sheridan and her family were very well-known in Rathkeale, and had lived in the town for generations.

"I suppose again, Rathkeale and the wider community of Rathkeale finds itself plunged into the news cycle for all the wrong reasons," said Mr Collins.

The TD said that he was fearful that the incident would stir up tension in Rathkeale.

"I would appeal for calm to everybody.

"Tensions have been heightened since this awful event on Saturday, there is no doubt about that," he said.
