The 34th Dáil convenes this morning for its first sitting since the election.

A total of 174 TDs will gather at Leinster House, including 66 newly elected deputies.

So what happens on the first day?

Proceedings begin at 10.30am when the Clerk of the Dáil, Peter Finnegan, reads the Proclamation of the Dáil.

He will then report on the issue of the writs for the elections, and announce the names of all 174 TDs.

Ceann Comhairle

Next, the House moves to the election of Ceann Comhairle - which is the subject of much intrigue.

Four TDs have been nominated to contest the role, which is decided by secret ballot.

The clerk will announce the names of the nominees and each individual will have five minutes to address the Dáil.

The vote takes place with three hours allowed for counting, although the result may be known by early this afternoon.

Given the number of contenders, the role is likely to be decided by transfers.

The Dáil will convene again at 3pm for the announcement of the new Ceann Comhairle.

They will make a speech, followed by Taoiseach Simon Harris and other party leaders.

Nominations for Taoiseach

If there are nominations for Taoiseach, there will be more speeches by nominators and seconders.

Then TDs will vote on the matter.

But given that no government deal has been hammered out, it is certain that no nominee for taoiseach will command the support of a majority in the Dáil.

At this stage, a date will be fixed for the Dáil to reconvene in the new year, and the House will adjourn.

This will allow for government formation discussions to continue over the next few weeks.
