A woman who was critically injured when she was assaulted on St Patrick's Street in Cork on Sunday night has died from her injuries.
She has been named locally as 36-year-old Vanessa O'Callaghan.
She was a native of Cork city and is understood to have been a user of homeless services in the city for a number of years.
Ms O'Callaghan died this afternoon at Cork University Hospital.
A post-mortem examination on her body is due to take place tomorrow.
Gardaí will decide the direction of the investigation once the post-mortem is completed and preliminary results are available to them.
Ms O'Callaghan was found lying on the ground outside the former Savoy cinema on St Patrick's Street at around 8pm on Sunday.
She was taken to CUH with life-threatening injuries.
A soup kitchen was in operation outside the former cinema when a row broke out nearby.
One of the soup kitchen volunteers spotted Ms O'Callaghan on the ground and went to check on her but could not find a pulse.
She began CPR until paramedics arrived.
An incident room was subsequently set up at Anglesea Street Garda Station.
Gardaí have taken statements from people who were in the area at the time of the assault and are appealing for witnesses who may have information to contact them.
They are also looking for dash camera and mobile phone footage from anyone who was on the street, which was busy at the time.
