Crunching the numbers - what does the Exit Poll tell us?

In the latest episode of RTÉ's General Election podcast Behind the Ballot, David McCullagh and Katie Hannon get stuck into the nitty-gritty of what the RTÉ, Irish Times, TG4 and Trinity College Dublin Exit Poll carried out by Ipsos B&A data suggests.

The duo are joined by two of RTÉ's political team, Mícheál Lehane and Joe Mag Raollaigh.

The poll indicates that two of the three big parties, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin are neck and neck with Fianna Fáil following closely behind. Mícheál thinks that Sinn Féin has recovered and that "this is a decent result" for the party, although David doesn't see a path to government for them if the poll translates into actual results.

Katie believes that Fine Gael will be relieved with the Exit Poll result although it doesn't appear to show much of a 'Harris hop'. With a sample size of 5,018 and the margin of error being 1.4%, it's still all to play for as the results come in over the next few days.

Also up for discussion is the curious situation at Limerick City where it appears the letter Q came before O on the ballot paper - will this have any impact? Only time will tell!

All this and more can be heard on RTÉ's Behind the Ballot which is available on all major podcast sites. You can find it on Spotify here, on Apple podcasts here, or on the RTÉ website here.
