Watch: Business owner tells of devastation caused by severe Storm Bert flooding

A business owner on Bridge Street in Killybegs, Co Donegal, said that homes and businesses have been "devastated" by heavy flooding.

At its peak, flood waters rose to around 1.2 metres, covering the roof of one car parked on Bridge Street.

Sixteen houses and nine businesses were impacted by the flooding which appears to have happened at around 6am yesterday morning during Storm Bert.

Gráinne Cafferty of Donegal Refrigeration Ltd said that her daughter was woken up by what she thought was a knock on her door. This sound turned out to be water rushing down the street.

"She came down and the water was up trying to gush in," said Ms Cafferty. "She said the whole street was practically underwater."

Ms Cafferty said houses on the street were destroyed by the high waters.

"Their furniture was floating. It was just devastating," she said. "Some people were upstairs in their houses.

"Other people came out of their houses. They were afraid. There were two cars parked here and they were submerged in water."

Ms Cafferty said that the residents of affected houses cannot return to their homes.

"We have a business here. We can turn the key and go home.

"These people live here and they will have to find some alternative accommodation in the meantime. It's so so sad.

"People are so hurt and so annoyed because this happened seven years ago and it happened the same way.

"The river was blocked and nobody cleared out the debris that was in the river."

She said that questions are now being asked and that it will cost an "awful lot of money" to fix flood the flood damaged homes.

"All their personal belongings, their photographs, the family albums - everything's devastated."

Work is still continuing to reconnect thousands of customers who lost power during Storm Bert.

An ESB spokesperson said "Good progress has been made through today with our crews and contractors restoring power to remaining customers impacted by Storm Bert in the west and northwest.

"Yellow level winds in those counties have caused some additional, though modest, damage to the network.

"At present, the number of customers is cumulatively in the low thousands and crews will continue to work into the evening to repair outstanding faults."

Updates on individual faults are available on powercheck.ie.
