A man in his 50s has died after he was stung multiple times by wasps while gardening at his home in Co Cork.

He has been named locally as Michael (Mick) Sheehan.

Mr Sheehan was cutting a hedge at his property on Tuesday, when he accidentally disturbed a wasps' nest and sustained multiple stings.

Emergency services were called after he collapsed at the scene, however, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mr Sheehan's body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

It is believed Mr Sheehan may have suffered an adverse reaction to the wasp stings.
